Privacy Policy
Effective date: March 1, 2026 · Last updated: March 2026 · Version 1.1
What you write in Selah is often the most honest thing you'll say all day. We built this app knowing that — and our entire approach to your data starts from that truth. This policy explains exactly what we collect, how we use it, what you control, and what we will never do.

1. Information We Collect
Account information. When you create an account, we collect your first name, last name, and email address. If you sign up via Google OAuth, we receive only the profile information your Google account shares with us — name and email.
Journal entries. The text you write in Selah is stored in our database and transmitted to Anthropic's Claude API to generate your scripture response. Voice transcriptions, where used, are converted to text and handled identically. Entries are encrypted in transit and at rest.
AI conversation history. Follow-up exchanges within a journaling session are retained to provide conversational continuity. Over time, your journal history informs more personalized scripture and reflection — this is the core value Selah is built to deliver.
Onboarding preferences. Your denomination, AI tone preference, Bible translation, language setting, and spiritual goals are stored in your profile and used to shape your experience from day one.
Behavioral signals (with your consent). If you opt in during onboarding or in Settings, we may collect anonymized behavioral data — journaling frequency, emotional theme categories detected by AI, tone and translation preferences, and session patterns. These signals are never linked to your name or email in any model training or analytics pipeline. See Section 5 for full details.
Payment information. If you subscribe to Selah Faith Builder, payment is processed by Stripe. We do not store your card number or payment details. Stripe shares only your subscription status with us so we can manage your access tier.
Technical and device data. We collect standard technical data — device type, operating system, browser, IP address, and session identifiers — for security and service maintenance. This data is never used for advertising.
2. How We Use Your Information
We use the information we collect to:
- ✦Deliver and personalize your journaling and scripture experience
- ✦Generate AI responses through the Anthropic Claude API
- ✦Retrieve Bible passages through the API.Bible service
- ✦Manage your account, authentication, and subscription
- ✦Send transactional emails — account confirmation, password reset, subscription receipts
- ✦Build your semantic profile over time, with your consent, to make Selah more relevant the longer you use it
- ✦Improve Selah's AI response quality and product experience using anonymized data, with your consent
- ✦Comply with applicable laws and protect against fraud or abuse
3. What We Will Never Do
Regardless of your consent settings, there are things Selah will never do with your data:
- ✦Sell your data to third parties — ever
- ✦Share your journal content with advertisers
- ✦Allow anyone at Selah to read the content of your journal entries
- ✦Use your raw entry text to train AI models — ours or anyone else's
- ✦Share your personally identifiable information with any party not listed in Section 4
The distinction that matters: if you consent to help improve Selah, we use patterns extracted from your entries — emotion categories, topic clusters, session length — not the words themselves. Your words belong to you.
4. Third-Party Service Providers
Selah uses the following processors to deliver the service. Each operates under its own data processing agreements and privacy policies. We share only the minimum data each provider needs to perform its function.
| Provider | Purpose | Data Shared |
|---|---|---|
| Supabase | Database storage and authentication | Account info, journal entries, preferences |
| Anthropic | AI response generation via Claude API | Journal entry text (for response generation only) |
| API.Bible | Bible passage retrieval | Verse reference queries only — no user data |
| Stripe | Subscription billing and payment processing | Email address, subscription status |
| Vercel | Application hosting and deployment | No personal data beyond standard server logs |
| Resend | Transactional email delivery | Name and email address |
Your journal entry text is transmitted to Anthropic solely to generate your AI response. Anthropic does not train its models on API inputs by default. We do not send your journal content to any other third party.
5. Personalization & Your Data Consent Choices
Selah is designed to become more meaningful the longer you use it. To do that honestly, we ask for your consent to two distinct uses of your data — separately, with separate controls you can change at any time.
Consent 1 — Personalize my experience
When enabled, Selah builds a semantic profile of your journaling patterns — recurring emotional themes, topic clusters, and spiritual arc over time. This profile is stored separately from your raw entries and is never human-readable text. It contains categories like "grief" or "gratitude," not what you actually wrote.
This profile is passed to the AI at the start of each session as context, allowing it to give you more relevant scripture and responses the longer you use Selah — without re-reading your old entries word for word.
Turning this off stops new profile data from being generated. Your existing profile is deleted within 7 days. Manage in Settings → Privacy & Data.
Consent 2 — Help improve Selah for everyone
When enabled, anonymized behavioral signals from your sessions — emotion categories detected, session length, tone preferences, scripture engagement — may be used to improve Selah's AI response quality and feature development.
This data is stripped of all personally identifiable information before any use. It cannot be traced back to you and is never sold or shared with third parties.
Opting out removes your data from the improvement pipeline within 30 days. Manage in Settings → Privacy & Data.
Both settings default to on during onboarding, with clear explanation of each. We record which version of this policy you consented to so we can notify you if material changes affect your choices.
6. Longitudinal Data & Long-Term Memory
Selah's core value is that it grows with you. Your journal archive — past entries, scripture received, and conversation history — is retained and used to generate more relevant, personal responses over time. This is not incidental; it is the product.
At the technical level, Selah uses two memory mechanisms:
- ✦Recent context: Your most recent entries are included in each AI session to provide conversational continuity.
- ✦Semantic profile (with consent): A structured summary of your emotional patterns and themes across your full journal history — no raw entry text, just extracted signals — passed to the AI as background context.
Your data is not ephemeral. It accumulates as your journaling archive. You may export or permanently delete it at any time (see Section 8).
7. Data Security
All data transmitted between your device and Selah's servers is encrypted in transit using TLS. Data stored in our database is encrypted at rest using AES-256. Your Supabase records are protected by row-level security — only your authenticated session can query your own data.
Your semantic profile is stored in a separate table from your raw journal entries and cannot be used to reconstruct what you wrote.
No one at Selah reviews the content of your journal entries. Database access is restricted to essential engineering personnel and only for maintenance or security purposes — never to read user content.
While we employ industry-standard security measures, no system is completely immune to breach. We will notify affected users promptly in the event of a data security incident.
8. Your Rights & Choices
You have the right to:
- ✦Access the personal data we hold about you
- ✦Correct inaccurate information in your profile
- ✦Export your complete journal archive at any time from Settings → Export
- ✦Turn off personalization and opt out of model improvement at any time from Settings → Privacy & Data
- ✦Request permanent deletion of your account and all associated data — entries, profile, semantic data — within 30 days
- ✦Opt out of non-essential communications
To exercise any of these rights, email support@meetselah.com. We will respond within 30 days.
9. Data Retention
We retain your account data and journal entries for as long as your account is active. If you request account deletion, all of your data — entries, profile, semantic profile, and conversation history — will be permanently deleted within 30 days.
Free tier accounts inactive for more than 18 months may have their data scheduled for deletion, with a 30-day notice email sent to your registered address before any deletion occurs.
Some aggregated, anonymized, non-personally-identifiable analytics data may be retained after account deletion for product improvement purposes. This data cannot be linked back to you.
10. Children's Privacy
Selah is not intended for children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has created an account, please contact us at support@meetselah.com and we will delete it promptly.
11. Crisis & Sensitive Content
Selah is not a licensed mental health or crisis counseling service. If content in your journal indicates you may be in crisis, Selah's AI may surface crisis resources within your session. Selah does not monitor journals in real time and cannot guarantee timely human response to crisis content. If you are in immediate danger, please contact emergency services or a crisis hotline directly.
12. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy as the product evolves. If we make material changes — particularly to how your data is used or your consent choices — we will notify you by email at least 14 days before the changes take effect. The version number and date at the top of this page are updated with each revision. Continued use of Selah after the effective date constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
